What are the Shadow People? Everyone seems to have a pet theory, but I think it best to approach these beings from the animistic perspective that we exist in a diverse ecosystem of spirits who live side by side with us but are not necessarily visible to us. Additionally, many of the beings may not have been named and categorized by humans.
For example, the hooded monk figure that attacked Mikk could be a parasitic entity that feeds off the energy provided by the negative emotions of human beings. In Mysteries in the Mist , I discuss briefly the blob-like parasites that seem to favour places like dive bars that are full of heartache and human suffering.
This hooded figure could be another, perhaps more sentient version of these parasites, or the being might shade into the realm that humans call demonic since it seemed interested in holding Mikk in an Otherworld place. Itâs possible that it wanted to keep Mikk in that place so that it could occupy his bodyâa hallmark of the spirits humans call demons.
In other stories, however, we have these shadowy figures simply appearing to scare the bejabbers out of some poor human and then disappearing. The sense that we have of these creatures is that they are silently observing human beings, and, in my more fanciful moments, I wonder if some of the Shadow People arenât scientists from another dimension tasked with learning about the behaviour of the featherless bipeds inhabiting our realm.
Given the large number of Shadow People sightings that seem to occur around sleep, one wonders if some of these beings may not be a special form of the sleep paralysis entityâan updated version of the Old Hag, if you will. Iâm not entirely convinced that sleep paralysis is a completely physiological process; it seems that, for some people, there may be an element of spirit incursion working with the physiological process that paralyzes people.
Now that we have entered the less material realms of the paranormal, letâs take a look at some phantom occurrences that have puzzled paranormal chroniclers across Canada.
